A brief environmental video essay that looks at the Dead Zone in the Gulf Mexico and the effect of industrial agriculture, fertilizer, and manure on America’s waterways. Specifically, I trace the oxygen deprivation caused by algal blooms in the Dead Zone back to overuse of fertilizers and runoff from conventional farms near the Mississippi.

Animal agriculture does more than just pollute the water. It also results in a massive amount of lost food. When you feed 100 pounds of corn to a cow, you only get about 10 pounds of beef in return. Cows also drink an extraordinary amount of water over the course of their lives. And if that wasn’t enough, cows produce greenhouse gases.
Only consumers really have the power to change the system, and they can start doing it immediately.
All we need to do is quit growing stuff, making cows that poop and fart. We will keep the fishes that aren’t smart enuf to haul ass out of a no oxygen zone alive. We may starve… which may be good for all the fat asses out there. All those dead fish, great natural fertilizer.. bulldoze them up. Gotta be Trump’s fault. If we quit driving and using electricity, quit flying and heating our homes, we will really advance. What about our poop runoff? Man, we need Jim Jones. World may as well end.
As time goes on, man will figure out how to live more efficiently and in harmony with his environment/planet. I would think. But it’s a problem that everyone needs to work on a little bit at least I would also think.

Gulf of Mexico had taken hard beating like oil spill, unrestrained off shore drilling, waste dumping, man made coastal erosion, hurricane, etc….for many years and now booming red tide . No wonder its dead zone is expanding annually.

Alga blooms are fed by fertilizers. Die offs are enhanced by the use of herbicides from the 1950’s on. The latest, glyphosate, AKA roundup, is becoming less effective as weeds become resistant. Multiple applications and stronger applications result. Most of the heartland is used for production of animal feed and ethanol for use in gasoline. As the ethanol is basically a zero sum game energy wise, Why do we use it ? Large scale farms are not family farms anymore, and are held as a tax write off. In fact, this is what happened to the family farm, and why it isn’t viable anymore. The low commodity prices are why countries like China HAVE to buy US grain products. The public doesn’t like the use of genetic engineering and gene splicing to make "roundup ready" crops either. Monsanto (and now Bayer) has resorted to mafia like efforts to control the use of their seeds and herbicides. Why do we need this ? It’s all politics, with most of the manipulation behind the scenes. F’N democrats. Make the Gulf Productive Again, or MGPA. Clean up our lakes and rivers because this is where our drinking water comes from.
NOAA is a waste of time all they do is talk about it and not do any think about it like always the just sit on thier hands , All the need to do is pump lots of air in to the dead zone to help put oxygen in the sea and stop the fish dying and us in the long run and kill our children children

If we reduce the production of protein sources on the land, won’t the fishery resource then be hit even harder by commercial fishing ? Also, in the mouth of the Mississippi huge amounts of dissolved soil particles which are not clearly associated with agriculture are deposited and is not this natural runoff in the Mississippi also a contributing factor to fish population die offs. Won’t there be a zone of lesser fish at the mouth of the Mississippi as the fresh water containing the run off from the soils from the Rocky Mountains to the Eastern seaboard collide with the salt water of the Gulf of Mexico ? Saltwater fish have a hard time living in fresh water and vice versa, some fish are partially adapted to the brackish mix, but not many. Doesn’t similiar mixing zones from great rivers…eg. the Amazon or the Ganges also affect salt water fish as the fresh water from all the tributaries is flushed with high numbers of soil particles untl the mix shifts over. In short, with a population of zero humans, this effect occurs to some degree, albeit less, at the mouth of every river which flows into the sea ?

Also add to this equation all of the other pollutants in the watershed picked up every time it rains or floods. House hold chemicals, automotive pollutants like gasoline, antifreeze transmission fluid etc. Industrial chemicals like solvents, paints etc. found in every flooded house and business, medications found in ground water from big pharma operations and sewage. It all ends up in the gulf and oceans everywhere. We are DOOMED!
