What can I find in Mississippi's marshes?

Vacations and summer go together like the National Football League and horrendous officiating, and for me, no trip away from home is actually a vacation unless it involves water. The latest for the Marsh Man Masson clan was a jaunt over to the Mississippi Gulf Coast, near the town — and waterbody — of Bay St. Louis.

My aunt and uncle kept a camp near Bay St. Louis, on the bank of Bayou La Croix, and were kind enough to invite my family and me numerous times before they sold it in the early 1980s. During those years, I fished from sunup to sundown off their dock, catching croakers, white trout and the odd redfish while throwing Carolina-rigged dead shrimp.

My fishing methods have changed quite a bit since then, but my experience with the Mississippi coast hasn’t. Prior to our recent vacation, I had never fished the region again.

So I was eager to see what I could find. Fishing new water is my greatest joy in the outdoors. I lower the bar of what I consider a successful trip, and simply go exploring, searching for marsh features that should hold fish given the day’s conditions. Then I see if I can find what they’re willing to eat.

It didn’t take long to get my first bite during my maiden voyage into the Mississippi marsh, and I certainly learned a lot as the day went on. I had a blast testing my skills against the Magnolia State’s wetlands.

Like the video? Please give it a thumbs-up, and subscribe to the Marsh Man Masson channel on YouTube. Also, leave a comment below. Have you ever fished this section of the Mississippi coast? If so, how’d you fare? In general, do you enjoy fishing new states or otherwise unfamiliar areas to see what you can find?

Enjoyed the video Todd! Glad to see you came down to my home town to fish. I’ve never fished Bayou La Croix, but I’ve fished the Jordan River a few times and it’s not a bad area for reds. I’m also glad to hear the water down there is clean. The last place I went to was Hopedale and did really good there. I haven’t been fishing Mississippi because all around the bay there’s been algae. I had rented a lodge for next week down in Grand Isle, but not sure how that’ll turn out with this hurricane that came up.

This video hits me hard because I also grew up in BSL during the summers and weekends. We had a camp that got obliterated by k5. I’m actually looking to buy the old property from my family soon and will be back! I feel like the fishing out there is definitely not on the level of what we have in LA. But if going to the islands, maybe.. thanks for sharing this!

Flesh eating bacteria in that water , I wouldn’t be fishing there right now.

I would love to see a video in bayou segnette. Hit the tank ponds for sac a lait and bass and bayou couba for redfish. I think it is often overlooked and close to home.

My co-worker and I will be fishing along the waveland coast and around bay St. Louis. With our hobie kayaks. when ever the water gets right again? But that dam Mississippi river water is destroying the whole coast right now. And all our spots in Louisiana to. This really sucks!Hopefully we can do some fishing this fall? Hey at least you tried.🙂

  35. True Southern Waterfowler on January 1, 2021 at 11:27 pm

You avoiding Brian. Never run sideways. I spent lots of my teen summers in Pass Christian a half block off the beach. I had access to a an old skiff that me and my cousin Kathy would row out on to an oyster reef everyday.

I really like how your not afraid to admit your new at something and possibly fail, and show it to us. Next time you want to come perdido way, you got a spot on my boat if you want it.

  43. Reed Bond on January 1, 2021 at 11:37 pm

When the tide is acting like that you need to throw a blue and silver rattle trap
