POW LAKE RECREATION AREA is a primitive camping sight. pow lake recreation area is a great place to visit . Make sure you bring your insect repellent.

Pow Camp Recreation Area Operated by the United States Forest Service, POW Lake Recreation Area is located within the De Soto National Forest. This camp was used to house German & Italian prisoners during World War II and later used as a Navy rifle range, now only old ammunition bunkers and a few foundations remain. Camp sites are available on a first come first serve basis and unnumbered with a 7 day stay limit. There is a 7 acre lake and fishing is allowed. Tuxchanie Hiking Trail is accessible on the east side of PWO lake. Note: All National Forest Campgrounds do not allow alcohol. Hiking trail is foot traffic only. Non-fee campground.
Directions: Take Highway 49 to Highway 67; turn east on Bethel Road; follow Bethel to four-way stop; continue on Bethel for approximately 4 miles; follow signs to lake area.

you know there is an alligator in that lake, there are signs posted there. it is not safe to sleep like that in the open
