We need a radically new approach to ocean conservation, says marine biologist and TED Fellow Alasdair Harris. In a visionary talk, he lays out a surprising solution to the problem of overfishing that could both revive marine life and rebuild local fisheries — all by taking less from the ocean. “When we design it right, marine conservation reaps dividends that go far beyond protecting nature,” he says.

Amazing story!
As much I am a farmer in land I also see the great value in the seas. My country is the country with the highest marine biodiversity in the world. In its history and birth documented was the evolution of marine organisms to freshwater. We need to protect our marine biodiversity.
Amazing… truly a hero of Earth
I thought the ideas were obvious but the case study of success is absolutely mindblowing!

I bought your DVD. EXTRAORDINARILY DISAPPOINTED. I know how to break a bottle.
It would be interesting to see a collaboration with Enric Sala. See his TED talk of Juni 2018. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9IPHZ2rN-Hs
Aye aye captain obvious. If fishermen invested in aquaculture they would offset their impact. Should trawlers be taxed to facilitate replenishing stocks & to fund open sea aquaculture ? Yes.
Sounds too much like Gordon Ramsey
Glad to see TED promoting real science and not why kids should be drag queens

So touching! Amazing work!!
These ted talks are pathetic
It should be for a few years, I’ve traveled the world and met the people that survive on these foods. I think they should outlaw commercial fishing boats,
Lex Luthor
If Lex Luthor were a conservationist…
I dig it.

Thank you Alasdair Harris for caring.
How will the income be sustainable during the closure period?
It all started with ‘one’ man’s vision of a better future too. It shows what the spark of one mind can do for the world. Thank you Alasdair Harris! How very inspirational.

Incredible work, keep it up.
Dr Harris is such a good presenter, very convincing!
A big lesson for everybody indeed
No Vietnamese subtitles?
Honestly, the first voice of TED makes me obsessive😂
So unless you are buying directly (as in locally?) from one of these small scale fishers, you better not be eating animals from the sea. Otherwise you’d be supporting the greedy factory fishing industry.
squidword…
