Full Hike: Rare Outcroppings and a Grand Swinging Bridge in Mississippi
These outcroppings are a rare sight for Mississippians. The Appalachians manage to extend their claws into the northernmost region of the state, and grant climbers with an impressive playground full of bold rock formations and overhangs. Much more than a test of strength, in another time the natural caves dotting the area were an essential survival necessity given that Chickasaw people used them as shelters from the elements, and living spaces.
The second part of the trail hugs Bear Creek and allows various spots to access the shoreline. The creek is tranquil and mellow, as emulated by the countless turtles sunning along the water’s edge. Do not be mistaken, though, since those inert creatures will quickly retreat underwater upon the first approaching steps of a hiker.
The magnificent swinging bridge—built in the 1930s—perhaps steals the show as the beginning/end to the hike. From either direction, long, hefty anchoring cables lead to large stone towers that have withstood time. Take some pictures while on the bridge and admire its graceful arches. Or just take it slow because there are six other trails awaiting within the confine of Tishomingo State Park.

My Thoughts:
If not rock climbing (only with permit) then this is a short and easy hike, but it is possible to prolong by getting higher up on the foothills and taking the offshoot to the small waterfall. That offshoot is at the tree tagged with “TRAIL RUN”. The elevation gain might be off because it felt much less (that number is from the internet). I approached the sunbathing turtles to try for some photos but they were too quick for me. However, the one in my photos was determined to block my path. It succeeded. I was rather impressed with the bridge; it made for a grand entrance to the trail and was perfect for taking one last look at the creek before heading off to explore the rest of the park.
