Behind the Adventure – How to make cool travel videos

Making cool travel videos isn’t always easy. For us it involves carrying a lot equipment around. Stabilization with a glidecam, aerials with a drone and some fancy motorized time-lapse gear are the tools we rely on to capture our adventures.

For more information on how we make our videos check out the accompanying blog that we wrote: http://www.stokedforsaturday.com/2016/01/making-cool-adventure-videos-our-gear-list/

We put together this video because many subscribers requested it. We hope you enjoy it and if you have any specific questions make sure to leave them in the comments below and we will answer 🙂

I appreciate this is quite an old post, just came across you guys and yes: roger that "Making cool travel videos isn’t always easy.’ even working on a shoestring. Since this is a VERY new venture for us I went for the OSMO Mobile and an old iPhone 6Plus and a SONY ActionCam which gives me ‘options’, plus a MAVIC PRO which is awesome but quite honestly I didn’t use much on our latest 5wk trip to Thailand 🙁 Time will tell, I’m currently in post edit and have a long way to go…!!!

Anyway, the reason for the comment was just to say thx, now I need to go watch some of your other vids to get some tips, thanks again, great work.

  7. Red J Russet on December 4, 2019 at 5:47 pm

How do you even begin to learn how to use all this? Pretty soon I’ll be traveling quite a bit so I know I’ll be videoing a lot. I also travel alone usually. But how do I teach myself to use all of this?

Hey guys. Looking for a one body one lense setup. Currently using NX300. Don’t laugh it’s paid for. But looking for a significant upgrade. Things I care about. $$, weight, in body stabilization, water resistance. Any suggestions would be great. Just as reference I carry a gopro 5. But want somthing for the really pretty stuff. Thank you!

It’s a bit depressing I don’t want to carry so much crap when I go around. I have seen people with a lot less gear getting cool results and with tons of followers, but thanks for the info. It seems like a fulltime job.

  22. TechieWoodsman on December 4, 2019 at 6:07 pm

Amazing job and extremely professional. Amazing what the dslrs are capable of now. If you had to choose a budget camera and mount system for someone new to videography, what would you recommend?

I have a few different cheap camera options including phones, older Sony point and shoot and a cheap 4k action cam, but would love to be able to get some better shots when climbing and hiking.

  26. Pete R on December 4, 2019 at 6:11 pm

Have you switched to an electronic gimbal for your DSLR yet? I imagine it would be so much less weight and space. I’m looking into one. By the way, that orange backpack looks like you could fit a body in it!

  27. Frisian Sybe on December 4, 2019 at 6:12 pm

Wow for the amount of money you spend on the equipment you can make a world travel. But thanks for the advice and tips.

  33. Al I on December 4, 2019 at 6:17 pm

OMg your pronounciation of placenames is terrible, you didn’t take your shoes off before entering a hut (bad etiquette as well-cultured backcountry NZ hut users know that only lazy people and tourists do this), you don’t carry a tent/emergency shelter for injuries or huts being full… And you carry unnecessary weight. I had to be a bit skeptical here haha but know it’s all in fun and games.

  34. Innecke Lerm on December 4, 2019 at 6:18 pm

I really loved the video, looks super professional, those time lapse and drone footage though! I was wondering what stabiliser I could use for my Gopro? Or which ones I can get myself for both camera and GoPro?

for non wide angle/ zoom-able stuff, have you considered a high quality point and shoot like the Canon G7X mk2, or the G5X?
