Extreme Kayaking in the Grand Canyon

A big thanks to all current and future patrons who are helping fund this science communication outreach via Patreon: http://bit.ly/2Sfmkph

We took an expedition to kayak the Grand Canyon. It was a 220-mile long expedition that took us 12 days. We were 10 kayaks and two support rafts. While we were actually making a few different science shorts for our next season, we cut together this little video to give people a feel for what it’s like to kayak the Grand Canyon.

This is a goal of mine. What business(es) support(s) these trips? Where do I sign up?

  2. StoneAgeMan on December 4, 2019 at 5:34 pm

    Thanks

  3. Jess20x on December 4, 2019 at 5:35 pm

Why is this extreme?? I took my play boat down the Grand and it was fun…but extreme??? No way is that over class IV unless maybe it was flood stage or something????

  4. Ryan James on December 4, 2019 at 5:35 pm

I’ve privately rafted the canyon 3 times now (2 Dec & 1 Oct), and the next time I run it I really want to do it as a self-support kayaking trip. I need to actually learn how to paddle a WW kayak first. As I understand it the Canyon is a good place to hone one’s skill, it’s made me a damn good boater over the past few years.

  6. S on December 4, 2019 at 5:38 pm

Oh I know, I meant out the river.

  7. Marshall McQuillen on December 4, 2019 at 5:38 pm

What time of year was this shot at?

  8. StoneAgeMan on December 4, 2019 at 5:39 pm

I gotcha. Well, we paddled about 20 miles a day to get to the camp spots we wanted to camp at. You have to look at a map and have it planned out pretty well. It’s pretty easy to see the best places to get out. You can get out on most of the river actually. You just want to find the best sandbars. After the flood there are lots of great sand bars!

  9. JGrille on December 4, 2019 at 5:44 pm

    Awesome!!!!!!!!!

  10. StoneAgeMan on December 4, 2019 at 5:45 pm

Hey Elisabeth – we’re a team and this is what we do. We go on expeditions, and make videos. It is work though, so don’t let the glamor get to you too much! 🙂 Check out our website – untamedscience(dot)com

What time of year is this

  14. Tranquility on December 4, 2019 at 5:51 pm

I agree Bob. When ppl are in nature, they want to hear nature sounds. It’s pretty obnoxious how ppl always feel the need to put noise in there disguised as music. I had to mute it.

  15. NF Films on December 4, 2019 at 5:53 pm

One of them is my kayaking teacher

  18. gqganey on December 4, 2019 at 5:56 pm

This is the most hyped and ridiculous whitewater video I have ever seen. There is nothing extreme about the Grand Canyon.

That was epic!! I’m picking up white water rafting soon, a lot of flooding happening in my area. I’ll be running some urban and sub-urban creeks along with wild rivers. I’m so pumped, starting in a liquid logic remix xp9..
    Awesome video, I just subscribed!

  26. Science Filmmaking Tips on December 4, 2019 at 6:11 pm

I wanna say it was at 30,000. I think it was a pretty standard flow actually.

  27. Marshall McQuillen on December 4, 2019 at 6:12 pm

I am really looking forward to my GC Kayaking experience. I’ve been into many water sports including Wakeboarding but there’s nothing in comparison to Kayaking. Keep up the great videos and maybe we’ll see each other on the rapids.

  40. HydraYak Outdoors on December 4, 2019 at 6:30 pm

    Going on the bucket list!

  41. UberTee on December 4, 2019 at 6:30 pm
